STRATEGIC THOUGHT transformed through GREEN PROJECT
MANAGEMENT ‘GREENTHINK’
Presenter: Ms. Jo-Ann Murrell

Bio:
Architect Jo-Ann Murrell did her undergraduate
studies at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada where in 1985 she obtained her
Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES). The
Bachelor of Environmental Studies is the
undergraduate programme in the Faculty of
Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Ms.
Murrell then went on to the Polytechnic of North
London, England where in 1989 she obtained her
Diploma (Hons) Architecture. Her training at the
University of Manitoba and the Polytechnic of North
London has resulted in her use of ‘Greenthink’ in
her architectural designs and practice long before
the term became popular.
Upon her return to Trinidad in late 1989, Ms.
Murrell worked at the National Housing Authority
(now the Housing Development Corporation ) for ten
(10) years after which she opted to go into private
practice. She first started practicing as Jo-Ann
Murrell Architect and this morphed into Carisoul
Architecture of which she is the Owner/Managing
Director.
She has been Lead Architect for several projects
ranging from vocational training centres, libraries,
day care centres, single and multi-family housing
developments and commercial buildings. Her work
demonstrates a strong response to the needs of her
clients, the end users and the built environment. As
an Independent Consultant, she has undertaken
several projects such as the design and construction
supervision of townhouse developments and the design
of secondary schools.
Ms. Murrell continues her professional development
by being actively involved in professional
associations. She is a certified Project Management
Professional (PMP), a past President of the Trinidad
and Tobago Institute of Architects (TTIA); member of
the Board of Architecture of Trinidad and Tobago (BOATT)
and a Chartered Member of the Royal Institute of
British Architects (RIBA).
An advocate for green sustainable design, Ms.
Murrell is pleased that GreenPM is being brought to
the fore in that Project Managers in leading their
Project Teams would be consciously taking the
environment into consideration before making
decisions.
In the field of research, Ms. Murrell continues to
investigate and explore best practices that can add
value to her clients’ projects. An advocate for
Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Ms.
Murrell frequently attends conferences, seminars,
and technical sessions and does courses that would
allow her to remain relevant in her career and an
ever changing world.
